Mexican authorities destroy 14 homemade armored cars used by drug cartels

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Authorities in northern Mexico said Sunday they have destroyed 14 homemade armored cars of the kind used by drug cartels to fight land battles. The vehicles are usually adapted from commercial trucks, with steel plate armor welded on. Known in Mexico as “monstruos,” or “Monsters,” some of the vehicles junked were truly monstrous. Many had thick steel ramming prows welded to the front. Others had firing ports and gun turrets. At least one was painted in green camouflage to resemble a Mexican army vehicle. Video distributed by the federal attorney general’s office showed a crane with a claw ripping one of the vehicles apart in Tamaulipas state.The state, which borders Texas, is home to at least two warring drug cartels, the Northeast and Gulf cartels. MEXICO CITY (AP) — The southern tip of Mexico’s Baja California peninsula was rattled by an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.3 on Sunday, but the country’s civil defense office said there were no immediate reports of damage. The quake struck at about 2:30 p.m. It was centered in the Gulf of California, also known as the Sea of Cortez, about 81 miles (131 kilometers) east of the resort of Cabo San Lucas. PFLUGERVILLE, Texas (KXAN) — The Pflugerville Police Department identified a man killed in an auto-pedestrian crash on northbound State Highway 130 last week.Police said the highway shut down around 5 a.m. June 13 near mile marker 428A, with traffic diverted onto the service road. The crash happened just north of East Pflugerville Parkway.On Sunday, police said Christian Reyes Vasquez, 30, was the pedestrian killed in the crash. A man from Cerritos now holds the world record for the shortest time it took to solve a 3x3 Rubik’s Cube. Max Park was able to solve the puzzle – which has approximately 43 quintillion possibilities – in 3.13 seconds, beating the previous record of 3.47 seconds set in 2018 by Yusheng Du of China. Park also holds several other records in the “speedcubing” world, including the record for the fastest one-handed solving of a Rubik’s Cube, which he was able to do in just 6.2 seconds. His parents told the LA Times that they had hoped that Rubik’s Cubes would help with their autistic son’s fine motor skills, and that they never knew it would blossom into what it has become for their family today. Park was also featured in a Netflix documentary focused on competitive Rubik’s Cube solving tournaments.
